Hi, I interviewed for this company who offered me 30k per month. My current is 28k per month. I want to get at least 32k per month. So I told the HR "gimme 32k or I am not coming". They are asking me to prove that I have another offer for at least 32k and they will match it. Otherwise they will rescind the 30k offer as well.
What can I do? I want to have a honest discussion and a decent hike. I can cook up another offer letter for 32k but don't want any unethical activities.
What do you say?

Dear Animesh,

Well gentleman, whether to change a job for 7.1% hike or not is a call that you have to take. As such you have communicated your decision by telling them "gimme 32k or I am not coming". Now once you were so clear in what you wanted, what was the logic from HR to tell you to show another offer with 32K or accept the job with 30K? Why you did not put your foot down when HR came up with this proposal?

I feel that there is reason for this audacious proposal from HR. It could be because of HR or those who interviewed you felt that you did not deserve more than 30K. Second reason could be that you sent feelers that you are needy and ready to accept a small increase also. Third and last could be that they might have captured your desperation to quit the job.

The above three could be the possibilities. I have just tossed these.

Agree with Dinesh Divekar's comments.
He has analysed the situation perfectly !!!
However, I would like to add one more possibility:
May be the HR is sympathetic and wants to help; but still needs a ground to hike the compensation.
All said, its not advisable to change employment for such paltry amount.
If you are comfortable with your present employer, its better if you continue.

Dear Animesh,In addition to Mr Dinesh Devekar's observations above, you have after this episode learnt that this type of game can not permit any appointment. HR people are trained, experienced and expert while dealing people from all blocks day in and day out profession.Try another job, with sincerity , honesty , dedication not just as a part of show but should reflect these elements hereafter in personality while in talks.

I agree with Mr. RK Hansdah and Mr. Dinesh Divekar. When you change a job, a hike of at least 20% is desirable. Otherwise there is no reason to lose your seniority in the current job.
Unless of course there are some other reasons for leaving a job, like going into a professional company from a small family business, or harassment caused by your boss or getting a posting where your family is located and so on.
