Hi all,
I have joined a company recently as Head of HR, I am expected to start the department from scratch. This is a big challenge for me, although i love challenges but i have never started HR dept from scratch before.
The core work of my company is to do advertising through internet .It is a small business group comprising of only 80 employees.
Starting from the scratch is a big challenge for me and I am in a total loss that from which area should I start ...
Any help or suggestions are appreciative.

Hi Hrguru,

You can start with reviewing the existing policy (All HR Policies) and revise it to the Organization need. Check your attrition rate and the exit interview report (if any). Else prepare one and start initiating activities that would help to curb attrition. Check the pulse of your employees. You can arrange for a team outing to get to know the employees more. As you have joined recently I am sure you would find it difficult to get info from employees. Make them feel that you are approachable always (Though you are Head HR).

Check for any open grievences or requests of employees that are yet to be answered. If so, try to address them as soon as possible. This will instill faith in the hearts of employees on you and they will start approaching you for any issues they have.

Break the ice. Remove all the barriers that are existing for the employee's well being in the company. Prepare career path for each and every employee and share it with the team. Get the initial break through.

I believe you will accept the fact that Human Resources is the valuabale resource for any organization. Having a competent resources is tough and retaining them is toughest task.

Hope I was of some help to you.

HI, You should also develop the employee details. This will help to know them better and the expectations, from which you will get an idea about the prevailing practices and need of the hour. Deepa

Dear friend,
Please check the follows:
1. How many employees with respect to their domains?
2. Find out the team leads in each group for delegation?

Thanks for the reply friends .
Recruitment aspect of HR is not very imp in our company as it is done solely on referral .
What I collected from them was that they want a ten point HR policy.
Eg: issuing appointment letters, medical policy, training etc.
Any suggestions on this would be highly appreciative ....
