A lot of companies have HR and Admin as one department, whilst there are some out there which separate these two functions.
Some of them think that HR should be focusing on formulating and implementing strategies, let other experts deal with the company's administration. However, there are some too, think that HR is closest to the employees, they should be handling the company's admin as well.
What about you? What do you think?

Hi Ashley, In our organization, we have seperated the HR and Admin functions. Both these functions are very important and you require dedicated time and resources for doing them. Thanks, Ligy Jose

No.. Admin. guys not seems to be fit for HR. HR is a complete diversified different field than Administration. HR guy can work for administration. In my opinion, Administration comes under the Umbrella of human resources.

Yes, agree with you Ligy. Thanks for your feedback.
Since our company here is small, there is no clear line between admin and HR. The MD's secretary and I are currently jointly responsible for the admin of the company. It really takes up quite a lot of our time sometimes.

Dear All,
Nice that this question has come up. I was HR head for 3 years in a reputed company looking after Admin/ Security/ PR all together. Believe me, its the worst situation to be in.
HR & Admin don't go well together for the simple reason that HR ideally works for the employees while admin works against !! (admin will not move an inch till the forms are completed in all respects!!!!!). Also you need a flair to carry out admin jobs.
More importantly, you lose focus on HR since Admin is 24X7 job.
I have now shifted to a company where I am looking after only HR Activities. I can see a world of diffrence in terms of meaningful contribution that I can make to Company and Self.
Though unavoidable in small companies if you have the liberty seperate the two as quickly as possible.

Hr and Admin dept should be seperate depts in an orgn. For the smooth functioning of any professionally managed setup there should be a clearly defined HR dept and a Admin dept. Though both of them function for the betterment of the employee and the overall development of the employee and some where in the long run their style of functioning might overlap but they have to be seperate. In manufacturing setups there is nothing like Admin dept. There is one dept called the personnel dept under which comes the HR dept. One of the functions of the personnel dept. is Administration. In service industries there is nothing like personnel dept. They have HR depts. They until some time now were not having a seperate Admin. dept. But nowadays in order to have a smooth functioning of the office the HR dept has been divided into HR and Admin wherein Hr looks into the training part and the rest is looked after by the Admin dept.

Hi Sandy,
Agree with you on the admin is 24x7. Indeed, it is.
As the company grows, we foresee that we might want to have a separate admin dept to cater to all the employees' needs. But right now, I'd say that admin is still manageable between me and my colleague.
And you're right, you need flair to carry out admin jobs. I can carry out my HR works as perfectly as I can. But it seems that I just couldn't handle the admin very well. I am a people person, but I just couldn't handle those orders and problems very well.
Thank you all for the feedback.

Ashley

Hi Shreenath,
I feel there is no harm taking in admin guys for HR openings. Admin is a support function. For providing proper support, it is imperative that you understand the core function.
As long as the person understands the fundamentals, I dont see why we should not take people with admin background in core HR activities like recruitment.
We do have MBA's doing admin in our organization.
Thanks,
Ligy Jose
