Dear All,
I am attaching on presentation on Chemical Safety by using MSDS.
It will be helpful for all chemical handling employees, if you give a training by thorough undestanding.
You can add / modify with the examples of chemicals used at your site.
MSDS is to be reviewed / updated biannually.
Give your comments.

Dear All,

What is the difference between STEL and TWA? And Application of the same in Industrial Safety

Let me explain this by using a real life example.

The present problem in Mumbai about commutation by road is Traffic Jam.

Particularly at Signal Points lot of automobile emission takes place leading to increased Pollutants in the atmosphere.

If we consider this as a work place and working of Automobile Drivers and Traffic Police as working people, then STEL would be applicable to Drivers. However for Police the TWA would be applicable.

The drivers would pass the polluted area within less time but the Traffic Police would be there for all duty hours.

In most of the Plating Industries I have seen the jobs are assembled on fixtures. Assembly is done on a work station which has U type layout, or in multiple rows layouts adopting single piece flow concept. The assembly work station is at the center or at any one side of the shop. The chemical tanks have fumes collection systems as well as scrubbers.

The operator has to go to the Tanks for loading and unloading and has to come back to assembly station for assembly / dis-assembly

The work place monitoring at the assembly station has to be done for TWA, where the operator is working most of the time.

The work place monitoring at the breathing height of the operator is to be done for STEL. As the operator shall go to the tank only for loading and unloading, the time of which is less than 10 minutes.

The most ideal situation is to limit the concentration of pollutants even less than TWA limits.

Factories Act Second Schedule has defined different values for the above two.

Invite all of you for your views on this matter.

Regards,

Sudhir

Dear Y.Job Cornelius,
MSDS stands for Material Safety Data Sheet.
If any chemicals are used in a company, it is the responsibility of management to make the MSDS available.
The Physical, Chemical, properties are given in this document.
The specific information on precautions to be taken for Health and Safety during transportation, storage, Use and Disposal are given in MSDS.
Management is supposed to provide all safety controls as defined in MSDS and operators have to follow all precautions and use PPE's.
Every chemical has a unique identification number which is known as CAS number (Chemical Abstract Service). If you know the CAS number of a chemical you can easily get the MSDS on net.
Alternatively you can google SIRI Index to get the MSDS of the desired chemical.
You should convert the safety instructions in local language and communicate the hazards to the workmen.
In case you need any more information pl revert back.
Thanks & Regards,
Sudhir

Dear Sudhir,
Very well explained. Keep on doing the good work.
Dear Team,
It is just an information. Actually I was talking to Ex-CIF, Delhi few days back & asked something about MSDS. And as I said MSDS, the Ex-CIF, Mr. Sharma told me that it no more MSDS. It has been replaced by world SDS i.e. Safety Data Sheet only. Please get it confirmed.
