Developing leaders through a structured leadership development program
Many organizations realize the importance of effective leadership to enable an organization to achieve its vision mission and strategic objectives and to make the organization successful. these organizations place high priority on the training and development of their leaders at various levels and embark on leadership development programs. unfortunately many organizations go for the socalled "quick wins" by conducting a 25 days leadership development program believing this will solve their leadership issues and booster business performance. these organizations have got to be realistic as it is just impossible to develop and turn people into instant effective leaders in 25 days. to develop effective leaders a structured leadership development program is needed with a proper process and blueprint for implementation the duration of which could be at least 6 months. wong yew yip

I have worked as people development consultant with mercuri international and training manager for a jurong shipyard singapore and a licensed eduction advisor with mindchamps singapore. in the course of my work i have observed and identified three fundamental key leadership traits of top performers in companies. they are purpose humility and discipline which i coined as phd of top performers. employees with these traits are more receptive to learning and development. they have learning agility. develop these traits in people before any skill training to be effective. do you agree?
Training/development needs assessment
Hi i work in the human resources department of an oil & gas company and i ve often seen in performance appraisal forms where supervisors end up listing down the training programs required for the person appraised in the "recommended development plan" section of performance appraisal forms. the biggest anomaly here is that for e.g. a person s weakness/area of improvement has been found to be "lack of leadership capabilities" and the supervisor ends up recommending him for a basic leadership training. is the supervisor under the conception that leadership training will bring leadership capabilities in him? i feel that there should be development needs assessment instead of training needs assessment because training is not the only solution for an employee s development. in the abovementioned case i feel assigning the employee to drive small projects along with a team may help develop leadership capabilities instead of sending him to a leadership training. i seek the opinions of hr professionals in this regard. hope to hear from you. thanks naved.
