Dear All,,
Can I have your opinion on the following,,,
1. Does Emotion or Emotional Bonding plays a role in HR profession? (if yes how much)
2. If a HR professional formulates some emotional bonding with all its employees (or some of them) then does it affect his work (inclusive decision making)?
3. Is it a pre-requisute to be unemotional to enter into HR Profession?

Well, we all are Human beings and as we are spending a lot of time in our work place its natural to form a sort of bonding. There is nothing wrong with that unless it hampers our work. It should not make us overlook policies or make us do things that go against the Organizations wellbeing.

This is a complex question. On the one hand we need to implement policy and practice fairness in all we do. Usually we associate fairness with being objective.
However, we are emotional beings and sometimes to be really fair we need to think more about the spirit and intention of policy than about the "letter of the law".
I think good HR is about wanting the best outcome for the organisation, but realising that the staff in any organisation are individuals with different needs, wants, skills and knowledge. This means that to achieve the broad outcome (i.e. the good of the company) we sometimes have to respond to individuals quite differently.
In the end, the ability to make these judgements well is the difference between knowledge and wisdom.

HI Peerji,
being unemotional is deifnitely is not a pre-requisite for the HR profession...
You get emotionally attached to the employees with no prior plan.. its the kind of empathy and concern you have towards your employees..as you interact with them regulary... it is how assertive and diplomatic you are in projecting your thoughts ( policies/ rules) is all what matters.. employees find transparent environment when the HR's show concern/counsel them when they really require....
HR is a bridge between the employees and management.. if he is unemotional/unattached.. there develops a gap.....leading to unsatisfaction in the employees.
This is only my perception from my office environment...things may be different too in the corporate world..

Hi Peer Saab,
The discussion topic is really interesting!!!
As per my opinion HR has to be EMPATHETIC in terms of THINKING/ANALYSING and DIPLOMATIC in terms of ACTION.
If HR cannot controls his/her emotion , wok done or decession made cannot be effective and efficient. in other words, the decession will be made one sided that will lead towards wrong image for HR Professionals.
One must understand that HR funtion in One of the Most Important part of THE ORGANIZATION. I feel , it bridges the gap betweem the MANAGEMENT and the WORK FORCE. And EMOTION has to be kept under Control in order to mantain the DIGNITY and IMPORTANCE of THE PROFESSION.

Dear sir
1.It is definitely not the pre requisit to be unemotional.
2. It never effects the working or decision making if HR professional is
emotional for some employee/a group of employees.
3. Be emotional but maintain a balance in your emotional attidude and be emotional with your profession too.
You too can formulate new ways and even work in a better way by formulating HR policies and your own humanvalues by being emotional.
as you yourself explained in your theory of The Article THE BOSS.

i shall be answering the questions one by one:

3. no one is unemotional, it is just the way one displays it that is different from people to people. and for hr profession being emotional is the first pre-requisite to be a good professional. also being emotional does not necessarily mean that the person breaks down everytime or laughs like mad. being emotional is to understand feelings of people and showing empathy.

2. emotional bonding in organsiations is now-a-days more prominent than before. this is because, people are working in teams and liasioning and synergy is required to perform well. but, when taking decisions about a person whom the hr professional knows, he must take it dispassionately and look at the decision from a third party view and then implement it.

1. yes, emotions and emotional bonding do play a huge role in the hr profession as the hr professional is one person in the organisation who concentrates on the people management aspects. networking requires an emotional bond to be built, liasioning requires an emotional bonding to be built and of course, good industrial relations require emotional bonding. and also the hr professional is one who has to be the most emotionally intellient person in the organisation.
