hiii, can anybody tell me in very simple language that wat is HALO effect as m confused between halo effect n stereotyping

The word HALO refers to the circle of light that normally is shown around the head of a saintly/ very revered person connoting his/ her holiness.

The HALO effect refers to the sudden recognition / appreciation of the positive qualities of a person being evaluated, normally based on one or two positive experiences that the person evaluating has had occasion to know or experience first hand. Often this positive experience is something that has taken place very close to the time of the evaluation and the 'good experience' overshadows everything else. eg. a week before a persons annual appraisal, the the person being apprised has accidentally stumbled upon a serious system flaw about which he/she has promptly alerted management who could take corrective action. At the appraisal time by the superior, this one incident can become the HALO EFFECT that clouds all the other inefficiencies/ negative traits/ poor performance of the person during the year.

Stereotyping on the other hand refers to classifying people into our own predefined categories. eg. Our habit of judging a person and classifying them into one or more of the following categories inefficient/ industrious/ stupid / problematic etc

In a simpler form HALO EFFECT in HR terminology is used in Performance Appraisal. This is a negative aspect of reviewing officers. When a reviewing officer asses an employee based on only some recent good or Wrong doing and ignore the real assessment for full assessment year then it is termed as HALO EFFECT.

The halo effect is a cognitive bias whereby the perception of one trait (i.e. a characteristic of a person or object) is influenced by the perception of another trait (or several traits) of that person or object. An example would be judging a good-looking person as more intelligent.
while stereotyping is a popular belief about specific social groups or types of individuals. eg.. Filipinos are good english speakers, so if you find a Filipino walking in your place,, you will assume that he/she speaks english well, though you have no proof that he is a good english speaker..

Halo Effect is a tendency to let an assessment of a person on one attribute which may influence the evaluation of that person on other specific attributes. It is most likely to occur while assessing attributes which is (a) unfamiliar (b) not easily defined (c) involves inter-personal relations, or, (d) character.

Halo Effect: As saints are recognized with one dominant factor in the photographs i.e the holy circle encircling their head, similarly in HR halo effect is the distortion in actual perception whereby the perciever if influenced by one dominant characteristic of the employee thereby ignoring other facts which may be important though. So, to avaoid distortion we should avoid the halo effect and wgile assessing anybody's credential we must keep the whole picture in view.
Stero- typing : It is identifying somebody on the basis of his or her group. this is yet another distortion in perception coz we are ignoring the individual being and are connecting him or her with the group characristics which may differ in one way or the other.

When you form an opinion about a person by his first impression on you it is termed as halo effect.For eg- The person may be talkative but when you met him for the first time he seems very silent person to you. So you have formed an opinion that he is a shy or less talkative person, which is a halo effect.

In simple terms, in halo effect the perceiver makes a generalized impression about the perceiver on the basis of one single trait or event.
In stereotyping, perceiver perceives a person not as an individual but on the basis of characteristics of the group to which he belongs. Eg. Italians are quick-tempered, Japanese are industrious etc
