Dear Pinky,
I wish to add one of the very important aspect of HR function
An HR Prof. works as a change agent and his key role is to BRING ABOUT CHANGE-Change in culture, work environment, Org. climate, attitude and behaviour of people.
He is a sales person to sell his ideas of cahnge
He is a Finance person to ananlyse the cost effectiveness of each move
of management and
He is a Mktg. person to develop new HR products and Establish his Deptt. as well as his Co. as a barnd - A company to work with.
He is an startegist to identify issues as issues convert into problem and then provide solutions to the issues and not to allow issues to becom a problem.

hi pinky,
i agree and also impressed to what shabbir has said...but i would like to add few more activities to his list.....
There role of an HR professional is any organisation is:-
1) Recruitment & Selection
2) Performance Appraisal
3) Policy Making
4) Retention
5) Exit Interview
6) Employee satisfaction survey
7) Now-a-days even an HR professional in a manufacturing unit/industry handles IR.
8) An HR professional also has to prepare the Job Descriptions for the newly recruited candidates.....
9) Also in the current market scenario the HR team also takes part / act as Strategic Businees Partner in the organisation.....
I presume this much information is enough for you to get the roles of an HR professional.....
regards
ankit
