Hi There,
I work for a Software firm and i am leaving for a vacation on 2nd Oct 2011, whereas we follow 5 days week and federal US holidays. I am moving on 2nd October 2011, that is on Sunday and will be back to office on Tuesday 11th October 2011, where as my working days in this span are only 5 days from 3rd Oct to 7th Oct, followed by a weekend on 8th and 9th and 10th October is US federal holiday for Coloumbus day. As per my HR she says according to the rule of Prefix and suffix, all the days from 1st October to 10th October will count as leaves. Even if i report to office on 11th. But as per my idea only 5 days of leave should be counted.
Please share your idea, is what the management is doing is correct or not.
Regards
Venkat

Dear Venkat
If the company has declared holiday on that day, can the Management call you for duty without Overtime Pay?
If yes, then it is against the law.
If no, then it cannot be added on leave.
The Holidays falling before commencement of Leave can be prefixed and the Holidays falling after completion of Leave can be suffixed alongwith the Leave.
Whatever your HR Department is telling that is entirely wrong practice. Sometimes, they may insist you as per the advise from top management.

@Boss2966: Thanks for your reply, but i am quite confused with your reply.
My concern was about the Prefix suffix rule.. to be very clear, i am going for a vacation from 1st to 09th October. in these day i have got 4 days as a weekends.. i.e 1st & 2nd October and 08th and 9th Oct 2011. I am good to join my duties from 10th October but that day is a Declared US federal Holiday.
So as per rule of prefix and Suffix how many days of leave should be counted. Specify a number please.
Thanks in advance

Dear Venkat, It’s a rule in so many compnaies that if you are taking leaves and your weekoff is also added in the leaves . Your HR is right according to you company rules.
