Dear Seniors,
pl suggest on this case
One Business Development guy is being sent to Kenya for 6month or more.He was residing with his family in Gurgaon due to this movement he has shifted his family to his home town. This guy is being provided accomodation and DA in Kenya.
Now he is asking for relocation cost of shifting his family. Is he entitled for relocation amount?.In past we have given relocation amount to employees who have been permanently shifted from one location to another within india.
Does the above case comes under the priview of relocation claim

Hello HRbuff,
Relocation costs reimbursements are given for any movement by the employees anywhere.
But this usually applies to postings of more than a specific duration [varies from company to company & also usually applicable only to permanent/long-term postings].
Also, for short duration postings [typically a few months], the employee is usually given single-accomodation [NOT family accomodation], and they are NOT permitted to relocate their families AT COMPANY COST.
In case this trend of posting employees overseas is expected to rise in your company, suggest make a clear-cut Policy on Overseas Relocation right now. If not, you could land into problems later when everyone can take precedences & make comparisions with earlier cases to get a better deal for themselves--after all that's human nature.

In addition to TS suggested, the guy who was sent to abroad for 6months or more may not keep his family alone at the place of his last posting unless due to some unavoidable exigencies like children study, spouse working, etc. Obviously, he will wish to relocate his family to his hometown or other places as he deems fit. 6 months or more comes under long term dislocation. You might have provided single accommodation at kenya or family accommodation but the employee does not want to shift his family to abroad. In such case, his claim for relocation exp. to his family and transport cost of his belongings to hometown, is reasonable.

To my knowledge, first of all, Before relocating an employee, your Company should give proper guidence to your employee on relocation claim; otherwise there would be a problem as you said.
I dont know whether you guys have made a discussion on the following matters with your employee...
1, About your company policy on relocation if you have.
2, Anyother alternative / guidlines for Relocation claim if you dont have any such policy.
3, Additional Monetory /Non-Monetory benefites for a employee who is going to be engaged in an abroad assignements.
4, Elidigibility for relocation claiming etc.
If you did not disucss on above said matter with your employee then you are liable to pay his claim because he went there for your company not for his personal matters...
he should have been told that relocation claim would not be entertained as he would get an accomodation and DA in Kenya.
Seniors can correct me if i am wrong.....
Thanks.
