Hi,
In my company we have a employee who has not got any appraisal after he joined us, he is working for 3 yrs his manager told him wont give you any appraisal you can leave the company if you want hike.In this case as HR what can I do?

Has this happened only in his case ? possible reasons ?
Is your company, a small private firm ?

find out the real cause. Is it fault of employee who has not got apprisal for the consequetive 3 yrs or his boss??. Pon

As Vaishalee Parkhi & Pon have mentioned, in addition to giving the complete organizational info to this Forum to advise, pl also enquire on the facts of the case.

Another aspect is, assuming you have a formal HR policy in place for Annual Appraisals, even the Manager is bound to follow them.
If the employee is not liked by him/her on performance grounds, then I am sure the employee needs to be counselled & in the worst-case scenario packed off--AS PER THE LAID-OUT POLICY, NOT as per the whims & fancy of any official.
And if the employee is not liked by the Manager on personal grounds, HR has every business & right to intervene--the Focus being the Larger Company's interest & not the manager's.

From the Financial angle, it's the Company which is bearing the salary of an employee--NOT the Manager. So it's neither the Manager's prerogative nor right to waste company resources on a unfit employee.
Frankly, if I were you [& you have every right as HR to ask such queries], I would first question the Manager for sitting on the issue for 3 years without deciding either way. Based on this one fact alone--that you mentioned--I think there's something more than meets the eye w.r.t. the manager. Pl make your checks [if need be, discretely] & figure-out.

If you answer the issues raised by Vaishalee Parkhi & Pon, more accurate guidance suggestions could follow from the members.

  • You seem to be from HR community. Be careful and professional while posting a query and also in choice of words and terminologies. What do you mean by employee not got appraisal for 3 years.
  • It is responsibility of the HR to form and implement Performance Management System, to regularly appraise, measure and report performance of each employee to management as well as to individual employee.
  • It seems employee is not offered any increment for last 3 years, but has his performance been appraised thru a formal system of appraisal? If someone's performance is found to be deficient thru formal appraisal and hence employee is not offered any increment is acceptable. In such scenario also employee needs to be helped and counseled to make him understand where and how he is not performing and not meeting expectations of management. He also needs to be helped and guided to improve his performance.
  • 3 years is a very long period. in case performance has not improved in-spite of all right initiatives by management then it is about time to say good bye to employee and find a replacement.
  • All the above points are HR Dept.'s responsibility

Hi All,
Thanks for your reply, the employee works well, his job is to provide datas available for the business without his work other people in the team cannot work, the manager does not want to give hike,we are small company where we don't have any particular HR dept as the dept. manager say the other person in charge will do it, there is no one to raise the issue about the appraisal of a employee it just goes on, its the employee should raise it to them.Now I just stepped into HR dept would like to bring this issue to my management.
The Manager always say that this person does not work I really don't understand if he does not work how the other people in the team work.Its purely partiality.

Based on what you mention, it's pretty obvious that it's the Manager who needs to be given a pep-talk by your boss--he may not listen to you at all, and there seems to be every chance that he could bad-mouth you too.
Just talk to the management reg ALL issues MAKING THIS ISSUE JUST ONE OF THE MANY YOU DISCUSS. Given this Manager's attitude, it looks as though he is very important to the organization--so if you focus too much on just this issue, the management may not take it in the right way. It's more about the Timing & How you raise it--than anything else.

Hello J,
Our Seniors have already given you valid suggestions what you need to do being an HR person. It is good that you are firm, you will solve this problem.
I would suggest, you take your owner into confidence and gently press him the need to give you powers to bring facts in the limelight and tackle it your way. Be assertive and keep your owner / management posted. Usually, when an HR is introduced, especially in small firms, it is not liked by people there as their autonomy is getting questionned.
