Cylinder explosion
Dear all this is for your information and to initiate preventive actions at your plant/construction site. : two fatalities & one serious injury occurred in one of the major steel plant while unloading of gas cylinders from the truck as seen in the photographs. brief description : during unloading the oxygen cylinders from a truck which is loaded with 95 oxygen & 5 lpg cylinders the oxygen cylinder hit the neck ring of lpg cylinder which gave way its welding causing lpg leak followed by explosion & fire. further the valve of the oxygen cylinder too got damaged & leaked causing explosion & the cylinder flown like a rocket. two persons who were engaged for unloading were died & one person met with serious injuries. probable causes : 1 the oxygen cylinders were stored in horizontal position & without protective caps. 2 lpg cylinders were kept along with oxygen cylinders. 3 smoking in the area. lessons to be learnt : 1 gas cylinders need to be transported in vertical position 2 no gas cylinder is to be transported / handled without its protective cap. no cylinders should be received in our premises without having its cap. 3 oxygen cylinder should not be transported along with cylinders containing flammable gas like lpg acetylene etc. 4 no smoking need to be strictly followed during transportation / handling the gas cylinders. 5 gas cylinders need to be unloaded using standard method & not by throwing them. pl review the existing practices and takes appropriate actions. please communicate to all own / contractor employee on this incident.
Gas cyliners
Dear all i have a situation in my site. for gas cutting at height level about 40 meter the contractor used to keep the gas cylinders at ground level. now they shifted the gas cylinders at top to save hose. they kept cylinders in a cage. i keep on telling not to keep gas cylinders at top and it should be kept at ground level only. i just want to know is there any restriction to keep gas cylinders at top while working? if any legal requirement is there then i can strongly force them. please share your experience / knowledge. thanks and regards vijay
Distance between fuel & oxygen cylinder while storage, transportation & use
Dear all as per ansi z49.1:2005 oxygen gas cylinder in storage shall be kept with a safe distance of 6.1meters from combustable gas cylinders. as per gas cylinder rules 2004 chapter 2 general provisions section 21:storage of cylinders: cylinders containing flammable gases and toxic gases shall be kept separated from each other and from cylinders containing other types of gases by an adequate distance or by a suitable partition wall. gas cylinder rules 2004 is not specifying how much distance and both the above is related to storage of gas cylinders only. no my question is: 1. what should be the safe distance between fuel & oxygen while storage as per statues in india? which is the latest applicable act/rule in india regarding the same? 2. what should be the safe distance while transporting fuel & oxygen as per statues in india? transporting in same trolley is safe or not? 3. what should be the safe distance between fuel & oxygen while in use as per statues in india? request to put some lights into the topic. if you are not having updates of indian statues please let me know the same as per any other legalization.
