Dear Seniors,
If few workers / staff are comming late (15-30 minutes). Can we make some rule in this connection, like 2 times in a month is granted and on every 3rd late 1/2 day salary will be deducted.
Is there any rule in any act regarding this.
Please advice,
Regards,

Dear Ganesh,
You can do that.
But do you pay overtime when an employee works late?
Think about it.
I believe that employees are mature human beings and know their duties and responsibilities. You rather than playing a late coming police probably see it the work is being done or not.
If work is suffereing or they are late for meeting, etc then counselling or a warning letter will help.
Deducting salary is not a solution.
Its like telling a kid you do this and I will give u a chocolate.
Even kids say forget the chocolate, now a days :)

Dear Sir,
I do concern with the same, and I feel there should be some rules for late comer. I feel timing is very important part of our work performance that we can not ignore, so I would suggest we should give enough power to our security people that from the third day onward they should charge atleast Rs. 100 for every late entry.

Hello,
Deduction of salary or recovery for late coming is not the proper solution..............talk with employee, understand their problems then make any rules for them..........
Generally in most of the offices 3 rd late memo is considered as 1/2 day leave deduction. ...... It depend upon company type....

It's Good
But it depend on employee to employee if one employee come regularly late then it is ok but if some one come late for genuine reason than it is bad and if the job of one is
like that he has to stay late in the evening than it is also bad.

hello all,
but this is also relative to output.
i do agree that time discipline is important.
but this cannot be treated very seiously in a real time scenario.
if the late comer is the key contributor to the team the manager may have to take a practical solution for him as well as for team to ensure discipline & meet the output.

Hi All,
I do believe that late coming is an indication of an underlying problem. It wins a medal to find the root cause as to why the employee is perpetually late and agree on a penalty. This is workable for small numbers, however, for larger numbers it is important to note that, threat/deductions could only irrate them further towards industrial action such as strikes. As such their leadership must be tasked with the duty to ensure that their members come in time. In cases where this is not done, then they have the burden of discussing and agreeing on the implementation of the 3rd day lateness rule.

Dear Ganesh,
Thank you for the query and thanks to the contributors too. Instead of giving you a solution, I will raise questions to get the scenario clarified.
Is it a hypothetical question asked in an interview?
If not, what is the size of your organisation? And in what field does it operate?
What category of workers come regularly late?
Do you have flex-time system?
Have you tried to find out why they come late? For example, if they all come from the same geographical area could the transport system be unreliable? Or do they share the same vehicle?
I can go on raising questions, but I won't. I think I have given enough food for thought.
Have a nice day.

Dear Ganesh
I am extremely delighted with Mr. Simhan's suggestion because, i always love to probe into the situation before the query is raised and posted for acquiring appropriate solution... Even other members had shared their BEST OPINION as well.

The are many areas where professional's are lacking..........one is ANALYTICAL APPROACH where one doesn't apply LOGIC before whatever he/she does. It should not become habitual because it is very difficult to get rid of HABITS.

I suggest one should post SOLUTION along with his QUERY so that we can evaluate the situation at their end and provide BEST PRACTICAL SOLUTION that could be implemented for BEST OUTPUT.

You can define LATE COMING POLICY under the banner PUNCTUALITY. Make it flexible and i don't promote LATE COMING
& LATE GOING. Its not a good habit nor a good practice as well.

Please provide THE BEST SOLUTION to your EMPLOYEES rather PUNISHING THEM. Make your employees to feel "where they had went wrong and why they had went wrong" You should have EXCELLENT CONVINCING SKILLS. If one doesn't understand even after investing so much of efforts then he is liable for prosecution( i mean you can take action againts him/her)

Have a nice day...

With profound regards

Hi friend,
I suggest you to intoduce flexi timings in your office( Am not aware if it already exists). Even if they are late then bring them all for a meeting to show awareness on time management and why is that very important. If they still continue coming late then issue a warning letter to them and keep them informed that a copy of the same will be maintained in their records, even tell them that this might affect their appraisals. Also keep in mind that their late hour working is also been taken care of. Why don't you award an employee who always comes on time, probably this will serve as motivation to others.
Penalities and collecting money from employees doesn't sound that good. Instead try to throw light that they are White collared people and time management is the first basic step to be followed.
