what are the criteria to place a First Aid Kid in a Floor & the ratio (in terms of "boxes / Sq Ft", "People accommodation in the floor") of first Aid Kid for a floor?

The primary requirement addressed by these standards is that an employer must ensure prompt first aid treatment for injured employees, either by providing for the availability of a trained first aid provider at the worksite, or by ensuring that emergency treatment services are within reasonable proximity of the worksite. The basic purpose of these standards is to assure that adequate first aid is available in the critical minutes between the occurrence of an injury and the availability of physician or hospital care for the injured employee.

One option these standards provide employers is to ensure that a member of the workforce has been trained in first aid. This option is, for most employers, a feasible and low-cost way to protect employees, as well putting the employer clearly in compliance with the standards. OSHA recommends, but does not require, that every workplace include one or more employees who are trained and certified in first aid, including CPR.

The employer must take appropriate steps prior to any accident (such as making arrangements with the service provider) to ascertain that emergency medical assistance will be promptly available when an injury occurs. While the standards do not prescribe a number of minutes, OSHA has long interpreted the term "near proximity" to mean that emergency care must be available within no more than 3-4 minutes from the workplace.

Medical literature establishes that, for serious injuries such as those involving stopped breathing, cardiac arrest, or uncontrolled bleeding, first aid treatment must be provided within the first few minutes to avoid permanent medical impairment or death. Accordingly, in workplaces where serious accidents such as those involving falls, suffocation, electrocution, or amputation are possible, emergency medical services must be available within 3-4 minutes, if there is no employee on the site who is trained to render first aid.

Dear Mr. Ratnam.S
Find the attached file regarding First Aid as per Maharstra Factories Rules... Let us know anything more you need...
Dear Raghu
Good input... I think it's not recommend to keep any tablets in first aid box... If the first aid box is always under the control of a trained first aider then it's ok, or else any workers/employees can take wrong tablets which can leads to troubles...

Dear Mr Dipil

I just gone through this article where all gentlemen boarders have contributed and i just happened to feel that our country is never going to change from this red tapism and bureaucratic rules and hypocrites. believe me if we don't go for change things will occur as they are and we surely will not be able to check the number of deaths resulting from accidents. No one can stop accidents but surely these accidents can be prevented from being fatal. Someone mentioned about CLI and Factory Inspectorate etc, I just want to ask you have you ever seen any office bearer of these great institutes knowing about what are the contents of First Aid boxes? Guidelines were made somewhat 40 years back when factory rules were made and the medicines available at that time are still mentioned in the list of first aid boxes. I have never seen this Mercurochrome or Potassium Permegnate crystals during my 18 years of medical service. And so many things are in the lists which are just outdated and even may be fatal i feel. Cetrimide is not being used. What i suggest is please strive for changes and dont subject our fellows to those substandard items. We can get much more better version of medicines, Antiseptics outside in the market and those should be kept so that first aid box can be a real aid box and not an idiot box abandoned and uncared. We dont want to pay for our healthcare, i dont know why. At least OSHA's directions can be followed in the factories afterall we have progressed so much why this licensing audit etc these things have so much priority despite having no significat contribution in developments. Its the time that in the first aid boxes we must keep better disposable dressings, Shell dressings, Crepe bandages, Betadine lotion and Ointments, Ready made triangular bandage, Sofra tulle, Micropore adhesive plasters, A working torch, Good quality bandages, Medicated Dressings( I dont know what factory inspector is going to do with the approval of these dressings) remember he is not going to met with the accidents and if at all then he will not ask for the treatment as per the list pasted inside first aid box. There are companies who are spending so much money only on making world class first aid boxes and their contents just to ensure that right quality is provided which is required. And not the least no body bothers about these lists. I know what must have been bugging this gentleman who put this write up regarding number of First Aid boxes and what contents. And even though if it is unavoidble then there are ready made kits available in the market and let those people do their job who are specialists of their field. Imagine one single fracture of Thigh bone can use up around 3-4 crepe bandage, 10-15 sterile dressings, minimum 2-3 splints, and if we say that upto 10 number of employees keep 6 dressings then rest i am sure individual's shirt or pant will do.

I think software companies are more prudent and surely their administration is practical lot despite they get very rare casualties. But production side it is common so why not modernise these forbidden things which are really life saving. So much money is spent on things which may not be providing fruits but if life is at stake we should keep better things no matter if medicines, or items gets expired they can be replaced also.

I am sure it will instigate the right minds and we can come out of those outdated things.

Dear Sir

A very nice, usefull and thought provoking write up... First of all thanks a lot for come up with your views...

After go through your write up, what I remember is one incident which occured in my professional life... Our management decided to place First Aid Boxes in each section of the plant... My boss given me this task of selecting one... As you said, I succeed in find out one party who is preparing professional Ready Made First Aid Boxes... The cost of one first Aid Box filled with medicines was 2500... On putting up proposal for approval, my management reject the same and advice me to arrange only boxes in which we will fill up the required medicines from our health centre... Its costing nearly negotiable amount... Hence its get done finally... I was also not so serious about the First Aid Box and its need and all, so not insist for such a professional one... After gone through your post I feel guilty that If I try to convince my management second time, they might be approve it... However surely in future will do better job... Thanks a lot for such an eye opener...

Dear Ratnam

I think you may follow what Mr. R.P Singh and Mr. Rahhu wrightely suggest... OSHA is far away from our legislation and I think no factory inspector gone question it... I mis-guided you through my earlier posting, so request you to ignore the same...

Dear All

Let me thank you all for your overwhelming appreciation. I will strive to keep posting thought provoking articles on this site. Its a two way learning and one should not have reservation in accepting this vital fact. Sharing knowledge is always contributing to one's growth.

As i have earlier mentioned in one of my article that i am gonna start a venture related to healthcare trainings, this venture has already crossed conceiving stage and registration of the venture is done with the Name Health First name and now work for website and other things is in the advance stage. The aim of this venture will be to provide only quality services and products under one umbrella at very affordable cost. Cost will surely be there as it is for sustenance.

I am going to attach here a catalogue of products to be marketed by us as after thorough research we found that these products are world'd best. Since being from Trauma care and health care field i myself have found them industry worthy and with good utility in our day to day life. We are still working on cost front of these products, trying our best that these products can be catered at the price offered by our Indian counterparts, hence i am not mentioning here about the price of these products but surely i am awaiting, negotiating with the organization manufacturing them and it may be more of volume driven. If we are able to generate decent volume then surely will try to dictate them about lowering the price.

In a good hope
