Hi Mathew,

I totally agree with you. That is why, a constant review and measuring performance is necessary. In certain organisations, though the team leader would have rated his member correctly, the final rating will be left to the HR and adequate reasoning will not be given for the reduction in rating.

An appraisal to be just, it is necessary that there should be a system of measuring performance and the rating of the concerned superior should be final unless otherwise it is biased.

It again boils back to the issue that the Management should have a thorough opinion on the team leader.

In some cases, the negative opinion the Management has on a team leader affects the concerned members. How do we stop this?

This is a vicious circle and unless there is 100% performance, discipline and loyalty right from top to bottom, justified appraisal is a dream!!!!

hey seniors
im a BMS student working as a trainee in an MNC .......i hve to make a project abt employee satisfaction in ref to appraisals..............as in is the appraisals carried out there is fair or baised ...are employess satisfied by hw dey are being appraised..i would be greatful if u help me in framing questions reguarding employee satisfaction

Hello Hema,

We are a start-up company in the IT industry.
The team members have joined at different times of the year and each completes a year at different times.
What should be ideal time for annual appraisals?
What is the norm for hike in semiconductor industry?
Is an annual hike of 5 - 10% fair?
What should be minimum criteria for Focal?
I feel the cut off line should be 6 months completion to be eligible for the first appraisal. The rest can wait till next appraisal. Right?

Experts please help on this topic and let me know your views.

Hi Kashmira

I too happen to work in an IT firm and can understand the confusion. Where I work, we start the appraisal process for a new associate as soon as he clears probation. Afterwards, his regular appraisal would be alongwith other regular associates in April/May

Concerning the percentage of hikes, anything around 8% -10% is considered reasonable. Those who are under performers may get lesser and those exceptionally good would get a better percentage than the normal 8-10 based on the Service Head's recommendations. Also, the prevailing salary scales at locations have to be considered.
