Hi Abhimanyu,
Gross salary of the employees comprises of two components:
Fixed pay and
Variable pay i.e. performance bonus
Fixed component paid on a monthly basis while variable component is performance driven and paid on periodic basis.

Variable Salary means apart from regular salary.
Performance Incentives and Special awards and Target achievement payments etc..
these payments made only after the Target achievements or successfully completion of projects etc.. . it is also a part of CTC.

Mainly salary consists of Three major parts. First is fixed salary that is mentioned in your appointment letter(Basic, HRA, CCA e.t.c).Second is variable salary that varies every month. It may comprise of all sort of incentives, bonus, allowances e.t.c.and the third part is deduction part which contains all sort of deductions like PF, ESIC, PT e.t.c

variable compmonent may also be baised on the target once achieve.It may be the least in one month and highest in other month i.e. there is a factor of change i.e variable in to it.
