Dear Friends,
Personal fall arrest system -safety harness with shock absorbing double lanyard is being recommended for working at height.
Kindly help:
1) At what height PFAS need be employed and why ?
2) At what height this type of safety harness with shock absorbing lanyard can be used.
Of late use of this is being enforced.
Let us have a clear idea about fall protection please.

Dear Sir,

Good Topic...

My answers are following:

Fall Protection is defined as the means of preventing workers from experiencing disastrous accidental falls from elevation by effectively use of Fall Arrest Equipment also known as Personal Protective Equipment (P.P.E.)

1) At what height PFAS need be employed and why ?

Required when the risk of falling from an elevated level exists... Advisable to use from a height of 02metre and above...

2) At what height this type of safety harness with shock absorbing lanyard can be used.

Shock absorbing lanyard work by the unfolding and tearing of stretched webbing to reduce the impact load experienced by the worker. Lenght of stretched webbing is 1.8m, the laynard length is 1.8m and the workmen lenght is appox. 1.8m. Rounding up the three, we can consider it as 6m. This type of Safety Harness is only advisable to use if you are getting a clear free falling span of minimum 06 metre or above. Or else in case of fall the person will come to the ground, hence the entire purpose will become fail.

Dear Sir,
All jobs above 2 m ,where permanent platform with railing is not present, or extended platform is present, there we use fullbody, doulble lanyard safety belt.
Fall arrestor can be used with fullbody doublel anyard while moving vertically up or down.

Dear Friends,

When a safety man is at site men look at him for advice. With regard to safety his words are final. Are we prepared ?

Let us understand things in the right perspective as professionals.

Read my first question - At what height PFAS need be employed and why ? This question is about PFAS and not fall protection as such. PFAS is different from fall protection.

Fall protection prevents a fall. Prevents people from reaching the fall hazard by creating a barrier between the person and the fall hazard.

Personal Fall arrest system stops a fall that is in progress through a tie off system.

At what height PFAS need be used ? Ans: Above 6 feet.

Why ? Ans : From research falls from above this height are found to be fatal ?

Now; above 6 feet can we use safety harness with shock absorbing lanyard? Answer is -NO. It is not designed for use at that height.

Then at what height we can use it? Answer is where the free fall distance is more than 19.5 feet.

Hansa please bear with me for allowing workers to use safety harness with shock absorbing lanyard at a height less than 19.5 ft gives them a false sense of protection only where as it is of no use.

What Dipil mentioned is right with regard to the free fall distance of 19.5 feet or 6 mtrs. However pl.note that the elongation of shock absorber is limited to 3.5 feet only and not 6 feet (1.8mtrs). Your calculations need some correction.

So how will you calculate the distance ?

Kindly check the ppt attached. You may get a clear idea.

My way of writing may be a little different. However if my postings are of some benefit to those who read I will be happy to feed more and more of those what I gained through the years.

Dear Sir

Really great reply... Saluting your sharing mentality...

A small doubt from the presentation... Hope you will note mind it and expecting reply...

As per the presentation the free fall distance coming is 11feet...

Now please go through the below two sentance:

"Free Fall Distance is measured from the D-ring of a worker standing on the work surface down to the point where either the lanyard or the shock absorber begins to arrest the fall. It is strongly recommended that this distance be kept as short as possible."

"To minimize free fall, workers should tie off to an anchor point overhead and use as short a lanyard as the work will allow..."

No my question?

1. Even though the worker anchor his laynard to an elivated position, as we are calculating the free fall distance from D-Ring, the free fall distance will remain same or not...

2. As per the presentaion the calculation is as when the anchorage is at your feet... Can we advice an anchorage at feet? If not , what will the perfect height of anchorage point we can advice and why?...

Waiting for your reply.

Dear All
How we can calculate the impact load generating on an anchorage point in case of fall?
What should be the minimum advisable shock load of an anchorage point for attaching lanyard .

Dear Dipil,
We can calculate the impact load generated on an anchorage point with the help of a load cell attached to the dummy of 100 kgs, simulating a fall with harness connected to an energy absorbing lanyard.
The impact load will be less than 4.5 kN (EN 355)
The minimum advisable shock load of an anchorage point for attaching a lanyard should be 10 kN (EN 795)
Hope this clarifies the issue.

Ravi
