My warm regards to all
This is Namrata. I am a student of MBA(Hospital administration) and my course curriculum involves summer training in hospital for getting practical exposure to the hospital management. My area of interest is HR but I have already done an training in HR department of an reputed hospital and this is my last training during MBA. Therefore I am a little confused that whether I should do this summer project in HR or in operations as it will open up other areas also in hospital for me and will provide a greater understanding of hospital administration. Please suggest me what should I do and also the topic which involves application of management principles.

Hi

In my view, doing the training in operations will help you grasp the ground reality of the functioning of a hospital. This will be an invaluable insight and definite plus in interviews you attend, irrespective of what you do later either as a HR person or an Operations person.

While I am not functionally from a hospital related background, broadly I can suggest you look at areas like improving efficiency eg in patient admission process or patient discharge process, identify a problem area by discussing with the management and do a study on that and come up with your observations and recommendations.

Dear Namrata,

Jacob has given good advice. Having a knowledge/experience of operations helps HR people and vice versa. Hence, please sonsult the authorities on which aspect you should be working during training to help them. Search the web for suitable articles; for example I found one on Team Work that covers both aspects: HR and Operations at Emerald: Article Request - A case study into operational team-working within a UK hospital <link updated to site home> ( Search On Cite | Search On Google )

Another on o pharmacy at <link outdated-removed> ( Search On Cite | Search On Google )
