Please let me know how to deal and stop these kind of acts.
It is a small company of about 25 employees.
One of employees has just collected and left the Sodex food coupon for the month on his desk and someone has stolen it. I am not able to digest how a colleague can steal another's food coupon?
A set of original CD's have been stolen.
One of the customer's was happy with the employee and left a cholocate pack on his table as a reward, it was stolen.
It is a very small company everyone knows one another so well, no outsider comes into the company. The employees are recruited through referral only. Why this is happening and how to stop this ? Where is teh mistake? It would be embarassing to call the police.
Please throw your experience on this and let me know a way to solve this.
Regards

Hi,
As such i have never faced such situation as an HR. However as u said urs is a small company and has 25 employees so if i were at ur situation, i would have called a meeting of all n told them the situation that 3 such instances have happened and its quite shameful... so if any1 has taken it by mistake then pls give it back or place it back or else if any such person is caught red handed then it shall lead to a very sorry situation... also request everyone to tell u if they have any doubt on any1 so that u can be more vigilant... start asking the people to be vigilant n careful...

Hi Neha,
Thank you for the quick reply we have had a staff meeting and said what you have suggested,
I was thinking aloud that, when everyone is paid well, why should someone do it. Is it education or bringing up or is it poverty or what is it that is making people do this.
And what should we do to stop it.

Sad situation.
As far as the Sodexho coupons go... each booklet has a code. If you maintain the list of codes and which booklet is given to which employee, good.
You can announce the code to your employees. The chor will surely get scared and might return. Once the person is scared, he might stop.
Another option is when something (such as a chocolate box gets lost) which can be easily identified once found; just suddenly announce a surprise check. This can be done by employees themselves, or else the security staff can do it.
Even if you do not wish to do the check, just make the announcement, that from now on we will hold surprise checks and nobody can oppose it. Might work.
I dont think holding more discussions would help at all. You are dealing with a shameless theif, you must potray a stern attitude.

You can also take preventive measures by allocating lockers and telling employees to take care of their belongings themselves so that the thief might not get a chance of stealing the valuable items of others.
You can issue a memorandum that if somebody is found stealing something and caught red handed, punitive action will be taken against him/her depending upon the nature of offence upto and including termination with immediate effect.
By taking such actions, you will warn the thief in writing which may make him think several times before committing an offense and can justify your treatment with him if he is caught up in future.

I was a victim of such theft when once my discount card was stolen by some employee. However, it tured out that this was done in jest.
Install close circuit cameras within the office. This will help as employees will be aware of being under constant vigilance.
Additionally, the steps suggested by other members must be applied too.
Best wishes.

Hi,
I face this kinda a situation in my company, the preventive measures wich were taken were :Firstly I called off for a meeting where the employees were being told that whosoever has done it intentionally, I request to put it in an hour to say canteen where ppl can b seen less. Coz the person who has done if seen wil be embarrased. Moreover, I said in the meeting, I am giving an hour to all employees & to that person as well. & to my wonder, it was found there widin an hour.
Had it not been there, I would have again called for a meeting & my next plan of action of action was to tell every1 that am gng for a complete check & nobody will be going out. Slowly, with the raise of funds and with the consent of company officials, we have a camera installed....and now no more such cases are here. It gave a lot of advantages....

Hi,
I agree with what Shikha has to say. You need to take definite action which sends out a message to the culprit that the organization will make all efforts to reach the try and catch him. The cost of not acting in this situation will be much worse, it will convey a message that one can get away with such acts in the company. Today the theft is of things which are of not much significance or value tomorrow it could be related to the intellectual property of the company, this is a big issue with organizations nowadays.

My friend,
Generally who commits such petty thefts would talk more. Through grapewine method propagate a news that you have found the who is involved in all the thefts. The person(s) involved in them would talk more as if he/she is not involved. To add some fear psychosis, stare every one of them with a prying and probing gaze, the culprit will show over-confidence and unperturbed postures and gestures through his/her body language. Try these - very interesting and easy. At the same time, your interpretation should be accurate.
All the best.
