Seminar on
Mental Health Challenges of Employees in Organizations-UAE Perspective

Date: 10.10.09 Venue: Dubai Grand Hotel
Background
The social and economic conditions play a major role in the development of work related mental health problems. The rapid development of information and communications technologies, which led to globalization of the economy, has had a significant impact on the world of work. On one hand, everything is more performance-orientedthan ever: both organizations and individuals are asked to produce more with less. People must rise to the challenge and constantly outdo themselves.
Mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse and stress, are common, affecting individuals, their families and co-workers, and the broader community. In addition, they have a direct impact on workplaces through increased absenteeism, reduced productivity, and increased costs. Mental health problems are the result of a complex interplay between biological, psychological, social and environmental factors. There is increasing evidence that both the content and context of work can play a role in the development of mental health problems in the workplace.

There is a need for early diagnosis and treatment which would reduce the complications to a large extent. Promoting and protecting the mental health and thewell being of the population must be a high priority for governments. Paying attention to the mental and emotional health of a nation’s people must be given added priority during times of stressand conflict such as the Global Financial Recession. The development and implementation of a workplace mental health policy and programme will benefit the health of employees, increase productivity for the company and will contribute to the wellbeing of the community. .

This seminar will explore the need for mental health policies and programs in organization for the comprehensive welfare of its employees. It is designed for Managers, Welfare Officers and other professionals who wish to broaden their understanding of Mental Health services and improve the mental health of employees.
