What is the difference in the methodology to calculate Attrition and Retention

Pls help me in this. Sort of confused with the question andunable to get the right answer for this.

Retention is the opposite of attrition; attrition + retention = the average staff strength in a period.

I am no HR expert and am sure someone will inform if I am wrong.
