Dear Frnz,
I am in trouble. During this appraisal, my immediate boss was reviewing my performace, he told me to handle an additional portfolio, as of now I am taking care of entire gamut of HR. I told him, I could take up Industrial Relations as an additional portfolio, but, he is forcing me to take Canteen operations, which I have no interest, the other way, I juz hate it. I had communicated him the same.
Now the issue is, I am going to sit with my Boss (Head) for another review, and I am damn sure he gonna tell me the same, I don't know how to say NO to him / how to express my feelings without an argument.:no::-?
Frnz, ur views vl aid me to think in different ways , kindly post your views on this issue.

Hi,
Weigh ur current job profile satisfaction and then take a move. If not happy move on. However, adding new operation is always a welcome thing. If not interested there are ways to handle it. But telling no up front would not go in ur favour as ur boss wants u to do that (i feel its an order so ..). I think u can ask him to give somebody under you how can then be held responsible for the canteen work and you can monitor the activities.

I too feel its completely alright to go ahead with an added responsibility of Canteen Operations.
Please understand its not the ONLY responsibility, its only an extended role. Canteen is the major place where peoblems are initiated..and if you can handle this - its an added advantage to your resume. And as mentioned by Rajeev, canteen operations is also a part of IR.
Be bold - take a step ahead and handle it. Its a challenge... its a sign that your moving forward. Its not simple honey.... trust me. Its a real challenge.

I think it's ok to take up this additional responsibility. Though its an Admin profile, u can have enough scope to take certain creative initiatives which will bring some difference in the lives of the employees. U shhould feel urself fortunate that during this downturn when people are being issued pink slips, at least u r getting some additional roles for enhancing ur profile. So grab it!!!

I am very much ready to face the challenge, but, frankly speaking, my mind is not accepting this portfolio, dunno y? the reason myt b the operation as of now/the attitude of the management towards canteen operations. Keeping myslf in kind of routine chore! dunno hw I am gonna react to my Boss....

May possible your past experience about canteen is excellent and your job profile 100 %
fit for canteen job.
You think you are fit for IR but may possible this is your fake dream.
May possible you are not fit for HR so your manager select you as a incharge of canteen
I think your manager is right bcoz he knows you better than citehr members.

Dear,
Be transparent and honest to your Boss.
Ask him the reason why he want you to look after the canteen and what the career path after that.
Maybe he must be giving you the additional responsibility for few months.
Be positive if your are going for a second review most probably he want to discuss at length and take your view in consideration.
Assessment is done on your last year performance so your current issue will not affect your last year performance rating.
