Default Victim of Company Politics-----Please help

Dear Seniors,

Greetings!! for the day.

I am right now in a problem and don't know what to do and handle the situation which has aroused in my office. I am working as an Executive Assistant...During my post graduation I did a project in the same company where i am working...that time they offered me a job ....i joined the company after i finished my postgraduation.

They asked me to do a job which was more of assistance and less of HR, assuring that they will later give me responsibilities in HR specific role also. they don't have a separate HR Dept. in this organisation..only one old employee of the parent company is now working as HR manager...who has monopoly..and play politics in the company...I have seen this as my colleague has been forced to resign ...

From starting of my job i never got any task which is related to hr, but what ever task my boss asked me to do i used to do it ontime... my morale was getting down and i thought to change the company...i started approaching my friends and relatives to see if they have any opening in their organisation and also uploaded my CV on various job portals. one day due to some emergency reasons i have to forward my Cv to one of my cousin ...i mailed him from my official id ... and once more i replied to him as in office i cant access any other mail servers like gmail or rediffmail...

after few days the old lady(HR Manager) called me up and told me that management know that i am looking out for change (they read the mails of employees)...and i am using office infrastructure for my personal use.. in that case i should resign. Later same day she again asked me for the resignation letter.

I straight had a talk with my boss and told him that i am not looking out.
Today again she said that management has decided to pardon me and since i am lacking with committment i should do something in this regard...

I was totally committed ..but they never encouraged me neither appraised my initiation ... i tried alot but they never considered any suggestion of mine in HR related issues, nor they involve me in issues like recruitment etc.... and now they have started harassing me in the same way they did with my colleague ...and forcing me to resign... my boss never supported me...

i am now very confused ???? i don't have any offer in my hand right now... i don't want to sit idle at home... please suggest me what should i do ...so that management can realise that they are at fault.

Regards,
Gunjan

Hi Gunjan,

Firstly let me tell u that your thoughts of applying/ looking out for a job is not wrong. But the way of doing it was absolutely wrong. See as an HR professional, no matter with how much of desperation of a job we are into, we should not be using copany infrastructure for personal use. Finally this is what we preach the rest. So u should try not to repeat this mistake again.

Now coming back to ur problem. I think getting a job is not going to be a problem. May take some time but is not impossible. What you should do is go & talk to ur top management & tell them ur problem. Tell them what u aspire to do & what was ur reason of joining them. Finally they too have to fulfil their promise. I think talking your heart out to a sensible top person will definitely help to some extent. Even then if you feel nothing is working out then u should ask them to give u some time to look out for another job before u resign.

I am sure if u discuss ur matter in the right way to the right person things will work out.

ALL THE BEST!!!!

Regards,
Pooja

Hi Gunjan,

Looks like you have got yourself in mess.

The lady HR has a monopoly and she is more of a politician, OK

But you have given her a chance to put you at fault, right???

Try and discuss with any responsible as well as senior person in your organisation. If you can bypass the next level in hierarchy, do that.

If they get convinced, you have a job in your hand. In case they don't get convinced then atleast you can buy sometime for yourself to search for a job.

Be as polite as possible while discussing with firmness.

My Father always say one thing, specially to be implemented in today's world,

"If you are honest, look honest"

All the best

THanks Nivedita and Puja,

but the problem is that there is nobody whom i think is sensible...bypassing the hierarchy is not pssible because the next comes my Boss that Direcor and then the MAnaging Director that is my boss's father. These two men together forms the management.

Top of that my boss has said that they have nothing much for me to do ... they cant give me any HR role... as all these things are not in his prriority list.

There is nobody in this organisation who will listen me.

Gunjan

Hi Gunjan,

In my opininon what you have to do is---

Until you find a better opportunity -Stay calm, concentrate on the job assigned to you , try to neglect negitive comments from your Boss, never loose self confidence,if possible try to sharpen your skills and above all -have patience.

There are plenty of opportunities available in HR Field. If interested you can start as recruiter which carries more wightage now a days.

ALL THE BEST

I think you should change the organisation.

(1) You have made mistake of using company ID for applying to job. And your company is spying on you (they do not trust you). More so they will not trunst you now.

(2) They are not offering you the role you are looking at. Why waste time and look for right job to persue your dreams.

Best is to leave. Now the question is how you can make your exit very smooth:

(a) Talk to your boss and buy some time. Obviously you will not tell them that you are looking for a job so give me 2 months. Pacify the management on the email issue and assure they of your committment. Do the job sincerely for the time being.

(b) Look for the right job, find one and resign as per procedures.

Hi Gunjan,

You need to first decide if you want to continue with your present company or not. If you feel that you are not happy and wasting your talent then you need to seriously consider the option to change immediately as the job market is hot right now. There are many companies who are recruiting and you need to approach a few of them.

If you plan to stay then you need to talk to the top guys and make your requirements clear. I dont see this helping much as your organisation looks like a family run business. Try talking to the other managers and see if they can help you out.

Its your decision. All the best what ever you decide to do.

Dear Gungan,

What you did was absolutely wrong, using office infrastructure for personal reason but as far as the office polities is concern that is understandable and as a profsnl you also should handle this situation profsnly by talking to your seniors abut the issue and then wait for their reply, if the reply comes into your favour then continue with your job if not then do not take any step emotional and start looking for a new job and when you get it resign and take up the new assignment.

Thanks to all of you ..

I would like to ask you al one question... Can a company read and monitor the mails of the employees... Since its an official id most of the mails are official... is it that they dont trust employees...

In my organisation now i know that every body's mails are monitored.

How ethical is this act is????

Regards,
Gunjan
