hi all,
please clear my doubt...
Does industry matter for HR professional except for Recruitment profile?
For example: If somebody is working in IT industry for long time and looking for a job change, then can he look for any other industry( hotel, manufacturing telecom etc.)
Will his /her past experience be counted or would be consider as fresher...

Hi saloni,
The industry does not matter.A HR professional can go across any industry or across any verticals . The whole some growth in the carrer of a HR Professional comes only through this.The acceptance factor of the different industry depands on how you are going to project it.

Hey Saloni,
Definately its not that a candidate would be treated as a fresher...bt yes fr sure, max companies prefer to hire HR professionals with similar industry background.
And i think its vry imp to stick to an industry...cz it gives u cmfrt n experience,which wud nt happen if u switch industries often...so choosing n sticking 2 one industry is da bst option...
Also, if you want prefer changing to identical industries...

Hi Saloni,
The Industry does not really matter, but as Manisha mentioned, it definitely gives an edge. Especially when it comes to Industries like ITES, Engineering, IT etc as these are huge and hence they do have a few specific industry standards in areas like recruitment and employee rekations etc.

As a Generalist, as the name implies, HR work is general and I think if a recruiter was to not consider you because you did not have similar industry experience, they'd be doing you and the company a disservice. You could potentially bring new perspective and insights to a new industry. However, a candidate with your same amount of experience and education in HR would have the edge because I would assume they would have dealt with similar industry-specific issues. I personally commend those that branch out and try to gain HR experience dealing with different companies, culture, jobs, performance standards, etc. but it also depends on the need of the company.

Hi Saloni,
Recruitment is a vast area and we keep learning new things each day. "The art of Recruitment" has nothing to do with specific industry. A recruiter does not confine himself to one area when it comes to networking right?
What the person has to sell during an interview is - How soon he can get in touch with contacts in the particular field, or how effectively he can manage multiple positions at the same time, the game plan in mind when a new challenging opportunity arises. It has a lot to do in being initiative. No one would wait to tell you, but you will have to act and let others watch you (at least when it comes to recruitments :-D)

dear all
i feel industry does not matter to a HR professional because our job is that it does not make any difference if we change industry.we are responsible for training,recruitment,wage and salary administration,performance appraisal,disciplinary proceedings etc .these all process are same in all industry.
i myself worked in pharma,engineering,garment and textiles,finance company but could not find any difference.

I Agree with the fact that organisation preferre candidate from the similar experience background b/c it reduses the training cost and time to understand the sytems, culture and business.
Although the work is almost same but terminology and practices make diffrence.
U must have heard... if an Hr professional wants to switch from Manufacturing to IT sector it's very tough. Because employer do not want to invest on training.

Dear J S Malik,
I agree that it doesn ot make a huge difference..
But HR in the BPO/IT/ITES - I would say that in teh service sector - HR activities are different compared to the Manufacturing sector. Please correct me if I am wrong.
But I believe that Rrecruitment function alone - may not suffer huge differences in any specific industry.
