Hello Everybody,
I want suggestion from all of you. I am MBA-HR. I have only 6 months experience in consultancy after that i joined in a organisation(Jan. 2009), which have 100 + manpower. I am the only one who is handling HR here. There is no one who can guide me. I am handling attendance, recruitment, audit, etc. but what else i can do. There is not much work to do:confused: . Kindely suggest how can i increase my involvement & what kind of activities i can do here ( which keep me busy & explore my self.) People here exactly don't know about HR & its's value. looking forward for the valuable suggestions from all of you.
Thanks

Dear Jasmeet,
i think u got a plateform early in ur career to set up a hr department.
so take it as a challenge. However, i would sugggest to start with the fundamentals like personal files, registrations, attendence, recriutment, T&D, PMS, Statutory compliance, vendor Management etc.
i want to give a article on that for ur reference. Pls send a test mail at

Dear Jasmeet
You can implement the Leave policy and you can also plan for recreation once in a month..within your organisation..which involves some entertainment and thought sharing.... so that you can also involve your employees... You can initiate Birthday celebrations.. in case that practise is not yet implements in your organisation... you can keep the track of Employee records... which provided the details of all the employees...
Please let me know if any other information needed..

It seems your case is similar to mine. I am working in a manufacturing concern as Manager-HR in Kolkata since last 10 months. When I joined the organisation, there was no concept of HR. They defined HR as a person who does recruitment and nothing else. First you should try to win confidence of your employer. Then start with small changes like formulating leave policies, recreational activities with little expenditure, initiating performance appraisal systems, etc. I am attaching a file that containsall the HR Activities to be done.

Hi
Now that you have goo dknowledge of HR, it is important to understand business. It is only when you understand business that you will be able to contribute and add value. Please remember that as far as line managers are concerned, they are not bothered about jargon like performance appraisal systems etc. What they are interested in is how HR can help them IMPROVE their business.
Learn to spend more time with your line managers and understand WHAT THEY DO and WHY? If you are hiring for them, understand what the people that you are are expected to do, what sort of environment will they work under, what sort of attitude is required etc. At every stage , try to add value.
You have already learnt enough about processes and tools and know enough theory. Now, go out and find out what that theory means on the shop floor. Talk in everyday language, relate to people, dont go around talking of 360 degree appraisals etc.
Once you have conquered the art of knowing whaqt your customer wants and needs, you will have won the biggest battle. Dont focus too much on learning more from books, focus on learning business.

All the best. You can reach me on if you have questions.
