Default Is it benificial to join as temp employee

Hi,
please help me to decide. I am on project training (HR)in big MNC ,a software company. after 2 months of training they offer me to join the company as temp staff. I am a fresher, just completed my MBA(part time). Is good for my career growth to join as temp staff rather than joining some small firm as permanent staff. I feel company pays much less to temp staff comapre to their permanent staff. Will i get permanent job in good company in future after working as temp employee here.
pls help me , what to do??

Hi Shweta,

The situation which you in are is very delicate and sensitive. These days, lot of jobs are being outsourced by many companies so that the long term burden of employment is not there on their heads. Even if some jobs are outsourced, the statutory benefits like Minimum wages, Provident Fund/pension, Gratuity, Bonus, ESI, Leave encashments, insurances and other allowances are being paid by the companies. In such case, one can very well join as a temporary employee when all the above mentioned benefits are being extended. On the contrary, in order to exploit the employees some companies take temporary employees only to escape from paying statutory benefits. If you join a company and if you spending your whole energy and time for the company you are bound to get all the benefits that are legally available to you. You have every right to get all these benefits and absolutely there is no doubt about this.

Some companies do promise that they will absorb you after observing your performance for some period and ask you to be on their temporary rolls. In such cases, it is always better to take an offer letter like thing before joining mentioning in that you will be absorbed after certain period based on your performance and let them make it clear whether you are getting all the benefits that are being given to the regular employees. If they say that they don't, you can come to a conclusion that they want to escape from financial burden in the garb of temporary employment. Be careful in such cases and take a wise decision.

Whatever may be the kind of employment, make sure that you are not exploited.

Take Care,

Regards,

Hi Shweta

You mentioned the company as a large MNC, most of the large MNCs have a good amount of staff,, including HR staff on contract. This is in line with their global policy to reduce the overheads.

The work involved would definitely on par with what is given to regular hires, so you would certainly learn the job. Whereas if you work in a small organisation you may not get the exposure to the quality of work thats available at large MNCs.

However the downside is that many of these MNCs donot regularise their contract staff. Even if they do the competetion from other contact staff would be stiff. If you are confident of out beating every body on performance this might work for you.
Else the option available to you would be to move into another organisation after a year or 2 into a regular position.

I myself started my caree with IBM on contract basis, at the end of six months I was offered a regular position at IBM and also got another offer from another mid sized MNC.
