There's a wonderful quote from Zig Ziglar that "People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing. That's why we recommend it daily."

I am frequently amazed at the number of business people I meet who will not listen to tapes or read books or attend seminars. They don't have time to read, and the tapes "don't work." They "can't afford" the seminars, and they "don't need" the education. And then they wonder why their careers seem to reach a plateau!

Even a badly done tape may contain a kernel of truth, a bit of wisdom, or it may motivate you to do your work better or differently or with more integrity than "that other guy." Motivation comes in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes we are motivated by needing to pay the bills, at other times we are motivated by an inspirational seminar or the enthusiasm of a speaker.

Sometimes we are motivated by a desire to do better for our families. Sometimes we are motivated by fear, but we are almost always motivated when we are around exciting people with great ideas, lots of energy and a clear vision of where they are going. Motivation works!

As a business leader, there are important reasons to keep yourself focused, enthused, energized and eager, and you owe it to the people who look to you for leadership. Whether you stay motivated by re-writing your goals every day, or by listening to tapes, learning new skills or attending rallies, do whatever it takes. Your success tomorrow depends on your level of motivation, commitment and determination today.

If a candle has no wick, you cannot bring it to flame. How much ever you try.
If a person does not have a goal S/he cannot be motivated whatever you try.
Just as the candle needs a wick first, very often the person needs to be given knowledge of what S/he can achieve first.
In our function we often try to light candle which have no wick......then fail and wonder why people have no motivation or why our skills are poor.

Peer Mohamed has touched upon an interesting aspect of employee motivation. While on the one hand every individual has a responsibility to be self motivated and add value to society, when it comes to work, the opinions vary. Every individual is unique and an asset to the organization. The organization has an equal responsibility of providing adequate opportunities for growth and learning. Every team lead/manager has the responsibility of grooming employees working in their team and keeping them motivated.
Corporate rewards, annual appraisals, career enhancements go hand in hand. Festive seasons like Diwali can be occasions to reward performing employees and appreciating their contribution.

I absolutely loved this quote....it says it all. Motivation can come in all shapes and sizes...from the little street urchins to the corporate bigwigs, there is a story of life, courage and grit. My source of inspiration lately has been a product as unlikely as an iPod. :icon10: Well, I've been loading it with my favorite video training materials and viewing them whenever I am waiting for my client in their office lobby. The fun is in never having a moment of self pity and doubt.

Also, I love to read the walls of my clients office...that tells me a lot about what drives them.
