| | JET AIRWAYS Layoff - Moral of the Story Dear HR Friends,
The recent JET Airways episode which we are aware of.
As HR Professionals, what do we understand as the "MORAL of the story...?
What can we LEARN from this?
Inviting views from all and more so from HR Experts.

| | This shows that the HR should analyse what political atmosphere is prevailing and make decisions. The lay-off could demoralise the rest of the team and employees' confidence on the company will be down for ever. Look at companies like Shell, they are the best in HR. |

| | Hi Friends:
I do not think that HR alone was inovlved in such massive downsizing move initiated by Jet Aiways. This would have been prompted by various reaons like the falling sales and profitability. Therefore, when such a serious step is initiated, in the normal course, the entire Board will have reviewed the subject in depth and finally taken a decision. Now the way things unfolded in Jet Airways indicate that such serious things are done in a quixotic manner-be it termination of hundrdds of employees or its subsequent revocation thereof and presents the management in poor light.

| | Hi All,The Jet Airways layoff, seemed to be a step taken in haste and with some other motive rather than just cost cutting. We are living in India and not in America where it is easy to lay off people because there it is easy to get a job also plus there is a system of social security. In India it is really difficult to get a job and loosing job is something that creates a mental, physical and emotional turmoil. Hence any company before taking such a step should think 5 times, there were other ways of cost cutting also.Secondly as a HR person one should be aware of how people behave as a group, laying off 860 people at a go certainly had to create a team and a big emotional upheavel in country where people are so emotional. the politicians are always there to cash on to such opportunities. Hence if such a step had become necessary, it should have been done in batches of 20-50 people with some time gap.Thirdly this is a month of Deepawali a festival which is the most important festival in whole of India, such a step should have been delayed some more. This really showed the management in a bad light. This is a month when people give bonus and gifts to its employees and what a gift they gave. This was a big step and I can't believe the higher management being not aware of it. It certainly must have had a OK from the seniormost level any good HR person should have advised the management about all the outcomes, they shouldn't become a yes person to save your job. Please as a HR Manager, GM/ Director you should foresee the repurcussions your decisions are going to have or else it may create embarrasement not just for you but for the whole organisation. Thanks & Regards,Abhay |

| | No Morale but its business decision Airlines world over facing same problem of hike in aviation fuel price and reduction of air traffics. What will you suggest ?
HR in Airline has limited decision making because all decisions are driven by the economic health of the aviation sector & performace. Jet decision may be new to our Indian Society but in west this is routine nature and accepted norm.
Although Jet Management should not have recruited excess staff than required it would have been better for them. Surplus staff is always burdon on business if business is in the doledrums.
Any way restoration of laid off employees back to employment is good and welcome decision we must appreciate Jet management. This could have been averted.

Now however, they have unwittingly created a monster who know that their demands will be met if they protest and hence the power equation has drastically changed and the employees will know that they have the power to do what they feel is right for their benefits. Secondly HR department should have searched for alternate jobs in the industry for their employees if that was not possible then the company should have held a meeting and explained to their employees about the companies difficulties and asked them to voluntarily resign. Most importantly they should have cut out operations for 2 months or so. |

| | Dear All,
The management should have made a thorough ground work before venturing into the process of retrenching 1900 employees.
The issue came up to notice as the number of employees retrenched were very high. It should have done in a period of six months rather than going on a days' news and shock.
They would have made a halfyearly performance evaluation (as this is the mid of FY 0809). The low performers can be given the pink slip. They can abstain from recruiting new employees and can avoid replacement of the resigned employees. The percentage of salary hike can be lowered.
Cost cutting can be achieved through the withdrawal of the certain avoidable allowances and perks.
The retake of all the employees shows that it was a real flop.
So the morale of the story is HR should think out of the box before taking a hard step. |

| | LEARNING FOR MANAGEMENT: Though the law is in your favor, you should have sensitivity, humanistic angle, strategic planning, foresight for repercussions, ground work before action for smooth launch, respect for advice from HR deptt., general knowledge & forecasting of political scenario of the region, preparedness for eventualities ,understand importance of cordial & healthy IR.Termination is capital punishment & to be used very rarely & cautiously.
LEARNING FOR EMPLOYEES:Pastures are not always green at other side, think thoroughly before change. Job Security is extinct word,Politicians are ready to support with their vested interest w/o bothering for industry's health which will affect all in long run,Industrial terrorism may have short term gains but not permanent solution.

| | Moral is if you are not in HR you can be kicked any time. And it shows the atrocities of HR. And sad thing no one is there to challenge the atrocities of HR. Dont know if many members must be practising this @ their offices. |

| | The Moral of the story is as simple as that...
Never Love the Company, Love the Job.
If you love the job u will not regret anytime.
One can get a better opportunity anyday... So be cool and look for u r opportunities.
All the best for those who lost the job and searching for a new one.
