I need help from all the citehr members to know about their experience of the first day on any job. Some people experience outstanding first days and some the opposite. The First day on any job leaves lasting memories. I am doing a research related to it.
Kindly share your experience in 2 to 3 lines. If possible mention the name of the company.
Some examples of responses are :
" That first day was disorganized. They were not ready for me though they knew I was coming----no office, nowhere to sit, nowhere to put things."
"On the first job I ever had, I had a phenomenal first day. From the time I arrived, they treated me like honoured guest. That's the first and the last time that happened to me."
"Emotionally it's like being the new kid in school. You don't know anybody, you don't know your way around. Everybody else is just fine and nobody is concerned about integrating you. It feels like when you were a kid and nobody wanted to play with you."
So get ready to go in the past for a while and share your experience of The First Day!!!!!!!! Please do mention if any thing unusual and special was done for you on your first day!!!!!!!!
Thanks & Regards,
This is a very interesting and fun topic u have started.
I was completely lost during my first day in office. The person I was told to report to did not come to office, and for some reason my appointment papers had not reached HR (I was interviewed and placed in different locations). I had no idea what to do or where to sit. Nobody knew me and I did not know anybody. Fortunately, there were 2 other freshers and we were all joining as Management Trainees, so I spent time with them and eventually went home at around 4.
This is going to be a very interesting thread to read. :D
Very nice and interesting thread.
My first day was really happenning!!
When I joined this organisation, the same day the company has organised a customer meet for all the customers in the Germany and around. I joined at 10.30 in the morning and there was no body in the office accept my Boss and his newly joined secretary, it was her second day as well.
When I asked her, where is everybody, she said they all are in the hotel to see the preparations as it was the big event. I sat with my boss for couple of hours to discuss the HR prractices and culture and at 2 he said you can go home, change and come back at 8 pm for the meet.
I was thinking, there will be all kind of boring customers around us, but to my disbelief as I entered the hotel (wearing a formal suit) there was loud voices coming from the hall where the meet was organised, as I step inside I saw everybody dancing and enjoying. Then my boss said it was to give you a surprise, the meet( conference and discussions) are tomorrow morning and today we had this party for all our customers. They didnt tell me to give me a surprise as it was my first day.
I was the only one wearing the formal suit.
But it was a wonderful day or evening, this is one of the reason I am emotionally attached to my company. :D
interesting Thread to write in
First day was obviously filled with a lot of nerves, as to how the people would be and how i would cope up the pressures of not knowing anything, still at the same time to have a decent first- impression.
But i should say that things are organized these days and people just leave u with some minor tasks to handle for a day or two so that u can get acclamitized to the situation, which i think is really important.
It also helps to have co-operating team members ready to include u in everthing tht they get into, and voluntarily helping in understanding the process.

After going through the topic and various responses, could not stop myself to reply to such a wonderful experience sharing discussion.
I had join my first organisation (Steel Manfacturer) as Management Trainee - HR. In that organisation all the Management Trainees are given a Red Carpet Welcome and treatment and so was the case with me. Around 50 of my colleagues, who had joined alongwith me were taken through the entire thing so nicely, that even after 2 years it is one of the best things to think about.
Had joined after some experience and infact was not expecting anything great to happen and as expected, not much of a planning was done and I was sitting ideal for almost the whole day with only few small talks and informal orientation by my senior.
It is a wonderful subject to explore.
Let me share my experience, i was introduced to all the employees.
i was feeling very uncomfortable since all the faces were new. i was very reserved. i had a negative attitude towards the org since it was like a place where no one is interested to interact.
then later i came to know that not interacting to much with other employees and being quiet is the org culture they follow...basically everyone is scared of their employer.:(
