Default Education assistance for employees

Hi all

Is Education assistance for employees a common benefit given to employees in the UAE?

How is the program administered? Do organizations pay the tution fees for courses that an employee wishes to pursue or are the employees required to pay for the fees & upon successful completion of the program, the organization reimburses the cost of the course?

What kind of courses are available for employees under the education assistance program? Can an employee undertake any course that he/she wishes to do or is there a guideline on what kind of programs/courses would be made available.

Do organizations here have an inhouse further education wing? Do organizations tie up with major universities & provide their employees with an oppotunity for further education?

Hi Shaila,

My inputs are based on what we do in our organization:

1. We provide educational assistance in terms of flexibility in timings. If an employee is pursuing a part-time course in Dubai and needs to attend classes/tests during the working hours we allow them on provision of suitable evidence.

2. Depending on the discretion of GM, paid leave is given for preparation for exam. (max of 5 days)

3. For M. B. A tuition fee will be reimbursed on successful completion - at the end of each semester.

4. I have recommended tie-up with universities. This suggestion is yet to be approved.

Hope this helps.

Hi Geetha, thanks for your reply - jokingly - any vacancy in your company which offers this facility to employees to continue education, which is not the case in many companies in this part of the world and elsewhere. Interestingly, this is the subject of my presentation too. Do not hesitate to contact me when you have the green signal so that I can assist with you to get in touch with some senior contacts from leading Indian universities operating here.

Shaila, thanks for bringing this topic.

Ramesh Menon

Default Educational Assistance for Employees

Hi,

I generally feel this policy varies from Company to Company in UAE. Most of the locally owned companies do not support employees on this some exceptions being Al Futtaim Group, NPCC etc.

In our organization, being a Dutch MNC, each branch or OPCO is free to frame its own policy in this regard but needs to be approved by the Board of Directors in Netherlands.

Our management supports this idea provided the following criteria is met which needs to be studied and reported by the HR Dept

1. Adds value to the function he/she is currently performing
2. The employee adds value to the entire organization by attaining the said qualification
3. The employees guarantees that he works for minimum 3 years with the organization

Recently we had two employees from our Finance Department enrolling for the CMA course being totally funded by the Company.

For all the courses being sponsored by the Company the Employee is granted paid leave (Privelege Leave) as the Leave Policy of the Company not exceeding 10 days in a Calendar year for the exams/preparations.

Thanks and Regards,
