Dear Rajeev
Arbitration is a process of settling the legal disputes between the parties on a more informal basis but as per the statutory guidelines prescribed under Indian Arbitration & Conciliation Act of 1996. It is also called Alterante Dispute Resolution. It can take place any time, any where, any day and is a quasi (semi) judicial process. Arbitrator is the "judge" appointed mutually by both the parties. His decision is legal and binding on the disputing parties. In case there are more than one arbitrator, then there is a Third Arbitrator or Umpire Arbitrator. The arbitrators amongst themselves decide mutually the Umpire Arbitrator. The judgement delivered by Arbitrator can be challenged only in the High Court of respective jurisdiction. Hope this clears your initial doubts. Please e mail me any specific querry at

Wish you all the best.
