HR try to accept ATTRITION, its unavoidable...
Well,

actually i would like to cut it short,

and explain my views in most simplest way....

My dear HR Friends,

Attrition, Retention are a part and parcel of every organisation, just as life and death are a part of our living.

These two are unavoidable and cannot be won over.

Just get this point clear in your mind, those who have come have to go someday , some go earlier , while some go later, that is difference. You cant make anyone go later, if it is against his wishes, and neither could you generalise your organisation systems so as to make everyone happy.

LIKE TAKE THIS EXAMPLE:

You are running an icecream parlour cum juice centre, with the former having more varieties, ur having mango flavoured icecream, but ur not having mango juice, So people who like mango juice, may just visit ur parlour once and buy some other juice, icecream , but when they come to know that u dont serve mango juice, they will stop comming to your shop, so by going rule of generalisation, you just cant have every type of icecream , juice, to satisfy each and every person.

But most HR people are immature to understand this, and thrive mostly on bookish knowledge.

It is really impossible to understand human behaviour. It is not a cooler, TV or AC, that you can open and correct it. It thinks in a number of ways, and has lot of factors affecting it.

And dont think that just by doing any course, you can stop attrition, by taking , discussing with the candidate. Because, the candidate is not going to share his personal problems with you, and in INDIA, because of the malpractices done by HR dept, no employee trusts HR, so naturally you will not get to the root cause.

For eg. if an employee is sad, or just not feeling well, his colleagues may or may not notice this, but while on way to home if he meets some close friend, or when he reaches home his wife, or mother, or any family member, immediately after seeing his face would understand that something is wrong.

Because they have observed him, since years, and can predict from his face, what he is upto, how he is feeling.

Like you can lie to many people, but to your close ones its difficult to lie.

And dont know what you HR people you think you can achieve, as your are not at all fit to access the psycology of employees, you should only do your work and let the world go as it is ..

Some things in life are impossible to change...

Even though,

a man , boy has a beautiful wife, girl friend, he cant stop staring from any beautiful girl he comes accross in his life..

a girl , woman, has lots of beautiful clothes, jwellery at home, she will be attracted to the latest clothes, jewellery when she goes shopping ...

same with mobile handsets, you are attracted to the latest mobile with more features, and lose interest in your old mobile.

But even to above exceptions are there, one may not change his handset for three years as even though new latest models have come he may not be interested, while another may change his handset every three months...

so similar comparison can be done with the JOB of an employee....

Such complex is the human mind, suppose if we think that the how that wife, girl friend, clothes, jwellery, mobile fone will feel , when their admirer, or the one who was loyal to them till today is now not interested in them...we can then agree the fact that retention and attrition are two facts which cannot be ignored..

take another facts of life,,, some die just two minutes after birth, and some even live upto 100 years, who will live till when its unpredictable, in same way it takes a moment for people to change decision, to influence others or to be influenced by others.

According to my retention chart , on comparison with industry standard procedures an organisation can be classified into three kinds,
one which is lacking in providing basic industry standard procedures,

and one which provides exact the industry standard procedures
and one which excels in providing the industry standard procedures .

so in a company the improvement in atmosphere, facilities, etc will only show a certain decrease in attrition, upto a certain level, thereafter inspite of whatever improvement you make, the attrition is unavoidable and will not decrease to 0 or become NIL...

So try to accept the truth, and better do some work, instead of sourcing to consultants better you HR start working on recruitments because in the end it so happens that you outsource everything and just sit in office, enjoying in AC... and just peeking into employees lives to see what they are doing ,, and then using ur spyed information on their appraisals,, ,

ALL THOSE PEOPLE WHO TELL THAT THEY ARE OFFERING THIS COURSE < THAT COURSE< THIS TEST< THAT TEST LOOK ONLY AFTER MAKING MONEY....

The human mind is very complex, and diverse. Impossible to interpret and understand. Only to a certain extent can the human psycology be predicted. The rest is all unpredictable , that is actually where the fun , excitement thrives.

YOu are becoming very philosophical here my friend, when you know about the uncertainity of life, and materialistic things....why the hell one goes to doctor, why do you lock your home.

you may not be able to avoid attrition, but would always try ways to stop it, (as it is your part of KRA to which you are paid for)

looks like you work for a very big firm..where you have hundred HRs happily wasting their time, peeking employees affairs...happily outsourcing ....not many are lucky like you.....

i appreciate your narration about psychology very interesting

Dear Quick Bird
I fully agree with you, but
Some facts as pointed out by you are true and very difficult to digest-
however fact is fact and one has to accept it. No one can stop attrition and resigning from any organisation, as no one is having right to stop someone's intention of having career growth and thus leaving the organisation.

Lovebird143,

Attrition as you said is inevitable and we cannot do anything to stop it, but controlling is a factor.
would you like your employees to leave your organization in a couple of months of joining?
would you like me to approach them and brainwash them to my organization? this is a possiblilty...

If you see at the industry today all of us have our resumes on some or the other job portal but we are not on a hunt, most of us are waiting for something big to materialise and thus resulting into attrition.

You will generally find attrition the highest at the Junior Level, reason being they are new to industry/work culture/company etc...for them the grass is always greener on the other side...so it becomes the HR's responsibilty to show them that u also have green pastures too and hence we have employee engagement activities, Employee satisfaction survey, social gatherings, team outings, parites, games etc etc...

The attrition lowers down a bit at the senior level its solely because they have seen the world enough and they are on a settling phase..

My views could be contradictory....as senior means pertaining to AGE and Designation

Junior Management also pertaining to the above critirieas....
